What you do
You speak with students who are learning English, on video. Cambly asks tutors to keep their cameras on. It says to use Chrome on a computer, not a phone or tablet.
Students can reserve lessons lasting from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
Cambly Kids is for children ages 4-17. You apply from inside your tutor account.
What it pays
Checked October 13, 2026. Cambly pays $0.17 a minute, which it puts at $10.20 an hour. The help centre repeats it. Cambly Kids pays $0.20 a minute, or $12 an hour. Some help pages call the adult side Cambly Private+.
Now the sentence that matters more than the rate. Cambly pays per minute of completed lesson time. Cambly’s pay page says a lesson’s pay combines three kinds of time. They are waiting for the student to arrive, chatting, and waiting for a disconnected student to reconnect.
What we read
On October 13, 2026 we pulled the text of all 112 articles in Cambly’s help centre, across 20 sections. We searched all of it by word. We read the pay, payout and sign-up parts line by line, not every article end to end. We read one more help article, on applying. We read Cambly’s home, tutor, press and careers pages, plus other public pages.
The tutor blog would not load. We did not open images inside help pages. We did not see the logged-in tutor dashboard. Where we say we found nothing, we mean in what we read.
The waiting question
We found no Cambly page that pays for waiting for a call to come in outside a Priority Hour. We found none that says it is unpaid. A 2022 press release says tutors are paid for time they spend speaking with students. It is silent on waiting.
Cambly does state some paid waiting:
- A late booked student: you are paid to wait for 10 minutes. You must wait until the 10 minute mark to be paid. You will not be paid beyond 10 minutes.
- A student who drops out: disconnection pay is capped at 5 minutes per lesson. After that, it is up to you whether you wait, unpaid.
- A Kids student who does not show up: you are paid $2.00.
Priority Hours
A Priority Hour is an hour where Cambly guarantees a minimum of paid chat time. Cambly says you are paid at least 15 minutes. At $0.17 a minute, that is $2.55.
In a Priority Hour, a no-show’s 10 minutes of waiting count inside the 15 guaranteed minutes.
Cambly says it will occasionally have Priority Hours that guarantee 30 minutes. Then you are paid $5.10 or your actual paid chat time, whichever is higher.
How much work you get
We found no Cambly page that says how many paid minutes or how much work a tutor gets. We found no average, weekly or monthly earnings figure. So we print none.
Cambly Pro
Cambly Pro is a higher-paid tier. Pro tutors earn $0.25 a minute, or $15 an hour, for Pro lessons.
Cambly asks for 99% positive reviews, 98% attendance and 5 repeat learners (Cambly’s term). Those are minimums, measured over the 3 most recent complete calendar months.
Our reading is that these stats rule out Pro on day one. Your account must be in Good Standing, which is Cambly’s term. You then submit an interest form. Cambly says it may update these requirements.
Smaller pay lines
Cambly’s referral page lists $20 per referral when your friend tutors for at least 10 hours. Its Group Lessons Beta page (Cambly’s term) lists $12.00 an hour.
Getting the money out
The tutor page says weekly pay by direct deposit. The help centre says more. Plan on the help centre.
Cambly processes pay every Tuesday (UTC, a world time standard). A pay week runs Tuesday through Monday UTC. Tutors are paid every 1, 2 or 4 weeks. Your payment must be over $20 after fees.
Cambly lists three ways to get paid: Stripe Connect, Stripe Global Payouts or PayPal. Stripe is a service that moves money into bank accounts. Options may vary by where you live.
- Stripe Connect to a US bank has no fee. To a non-US bank, it costs 1% plus a processing fee.
- Stripe Global Payouts to a US bank costs $1.
- PayPal charges 2%, since July 14, 2026, capped at $1 for US accounts. PayPal is not available after November 11, 2026.
After Cambly sends it, allow up to 3 business days for US banks and up to 7 for others. Cambly says many tutors report much faster times. That is Cambly’s word, not our measure.
Who this fits
This fits you if you are a native English speaker. It helps to like talking with strangers. That part is our view.
You do not need a teaching certificate, a degree or teaching experience.
It fits if you want your own hours. Cambly says there are no minimum hours or quotas.
Who should skip this
Skip this if you live in California, Massachusetts or New Jersey. Cambly says you cannot tutor from those states.
Skip it if you need a guaranteed hourly amount. A Priority Hour guarantees 15 minutes, which is $2.55.
Skip it if you need money quickly. Cambly pays out only when your balance is over $20 after fees. It processes pay on Tuesdays. After it sends the money, allow up to 3 business days for US banks.
Skip it if you are not a native English speaker, or are under 18.
Skip it if you only have a phone or tablet. Applications cannot be submitted that way.
How to start, step by step
- Check the three barred states and your age. You must be 18 or over.
- Check your gear. Cambly lists a Windows, Mac or Chromebook computer and a webcam and microphone.
- Test your internet. Mbps means megabits per second. The tutor guide gives a minimum of 10 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. The Technical Setup page prints download 10Mbps and upload 3Mbps. The same page calls 3 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up the minimum recommended speed. Cambly does not say which pair applies.
- Apply in Chrome on a computer. No certificate or degree is required. You cannot submit your profile until a connection test passes.
- Expect the wait. Cambly says processing may take longer than usual. You may get no reply at all.
- Once you have an account, apply to Cambly Kids if you want. Kids pays $0.20 a minute, against $0.17.
- Choose a payout method now. PayPal is not available after November 11, 2026.
Before you pay anyone: Cambly says you need no teaching certificate to apply. We think anyone asking you to pay for one before you can start is selling you something.
Your first week
Day 1. Check the states and your age. Run the connection test.
Day 2. Submit your application. Read how Priority Hours work.
Day 3. Read the late-student rule. You must wait to the 10 minute mark to be paid. Compare payout fees.
Day 4. Still no reply? Cambly says you may get none. The days below start once you have an account.
Day 5. Open a few hours of availability at different times of day. Note which ones bring calls.
Day 6. Log your sessions. Write down minutes in call, not hours logged in.
Day 7. Do the arithmetic. Paid minutes times $0.17, divided by the hours you sat there. That is your real rate. Your pay week ends Monday UTC.
We think a headset with a boom microphone matters more here than any camera. Clear sound is the lesson.
- USB headset with a boom microphone Your voice is the whole job. A boom mic sits by your mouth. The student hears you clearly, and less room echo gets in.
- Webcam that clips to the top of your screen Cambly makes you keep your camera on the whole lesson. A laptop camera points up at your chin. A clip-on camera sits at eye level. You can start without it.
- Small LED light on a stand Most rooms are lit from above, which puts your face in shadow. One light in front of you fixes it. That is our view. You can start without it.
- Ethernet cable Cambly tells tutors to plug straight into the modem if they can. A poor connection can drop you from a Priority Hour. You can start without it.
The downsides
You are paid for lesson time. Waiting past 5 minutes after a student drops out is unpaid.
Cambly says it is limiting new tutors. The notice is on the tutor page and two help pages. We found no Cambly page that gives a time for an application decision. The Pro interest form has no stated answer time either.
Getting paid can cost money. Fees can apply to PayPal and to Stripe.
Cambly calls tutors independent contractors. We do not cover tax rules here. Cambly’s tax page says it will provide a form if your earnings are $600 or more. The IRS lists $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025, for Form 1099-NEC. A 1099-NEC is a tax form for contractor pay. The two differ. A tax professional can tell you what applies to you.
Questions people ask
Can I do this from anywhere? We found no list of supported tutor countries. Cambly pages differ. About Cambly says tutors live in 170+ countries. The ambassador page names the USA, Canada, UK and Australia. A guide names those plus South Africa, with the word “including”. Payment options vary by location.
Does Cambly run a background check? We do not know. Cambly names identity verification at approval. A text search of all 112 help articles found background check lines only about students. We found none about tutors.

What we could not confirm
- We found no Cambly page that says what a tutor takes home. We searched the text of all 112 help articles on October 13, 2026. We also read Cambly's home, tutor, press and careers pages. Cambly gives a rate: $0.17 a minute, or $0.20 on Kids. We found no page on how many minutes a tutor gets. So we print no average or monthly pay. The $10.20 and $12 hourly numbers assume 60 paid minutes.
- We found no Cambly page that pays for waiting for a call to come in outside a Priority Hour. We found none that says it is unpaid. Cambly pays per minute of lesson time. A Priority Hour pays at least 15 minutes, which is $2.55. Waiting up to 10 minutes for a late booked student is paid. Waiting past the 5-minute disconnect cap is unpaid. A Kids no-show pays $2.00.
- Cambly's tutor page and help pages describe pay in different ways. The tutor page says weekly pay by direct deposit. The help pages say pay is processed on Tuesdays. They say tutors are paid every 1, 2 or 4 weeks. Cambly says many tutors report faster Stripe payouts than its stated maximums. We have no measured time. PayPal is not available after November 11, 2026.
- Background check: unknown, not no. Cambly's policy page mentions an identity check at approval. We searched the text of all 112 help articles. The only background check lines are about students. We found no Cambly page that says if it checks tutors.
- We found no Cambly page with a time for an application decision. Cambly says you may get no reply. It says to apply again in a few months. Cambly is also limiting new tutors, and reviews may be slow. The same notice is on the tutor page and two help pages. The Pro interest form has no stated answer time either. So the wait has no set end.
- Cambly gives two internet speeds on its Technical Setup page. One pair is 10 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. The other is 3 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, called the minimum recommended speed. We print both.
- Cambly pages disagree on where tutors live. About Cambly says 170+ countries. The ambassador page names four. A guide names five, with the word including. Cambly bars California, Massachusetts and New Jersey. We found no list of supported tutor countries. Payment options vary by place. So we cannot say if your country works.
- Cambly Pro pays $0.25 a minute for Pro lessons. It needs stats over the 3 most recent complete calendar months, Good Standing and an interest form. Cambly says it may change these. We found no time for how long Cambly takes to answer the form.
- Cambly Kids needs a second application. We found no Cambly Kids page that says tutors get a background check. We did not read the tutor blog, because it would not load. We did not open images inside help pages or see the logged-in tutor dashboard.
